The Pierre Governor baseball team would be no hit in game one in a 2-0 loss, but come back and win game two 8-3 at home against Mitchell Monday afternoon.
The Govs had just two base runners in the first game with a walk in the second to Trevor Rounds and walk to Sutton Sonnenschein in the seventh. Tyler Christensen was dominant and barely threw over 80 pitches to reach the no-hitter and just one man over the minimum. A sacrifice fly by Jaxson Hartman in the fourth was all the Kernels needed but got some insurance from an RBI single by Parker Mandel to make it 2-0. Ridge Leimbach would go six and 2/3 innings allowing just two runs on two hits with one walk and 12 strikeouts. Brennan McCullough would get the final out in the top of the seventh.
Leimbach would give Pierre a 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the bottom of the first in game two, but Mitchell would get three runs, two on one error and the third on a wild pitch in the fourth to lead 3-1. But a two RBI single for Dawson Getz tied the game in the bottom of the fifth, Trevor Rounds would be hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to give Pierre the lead for good and Bridger Babcock would have a sac fly RBI for the four run fifth to give Pierre a 5-3 lead. The Govs tacked on three more runs with help from Getz’s third RBI of the day and Will Danburg and Hudson Stoeser would get the win on the mound. Danburg threw six and 1/3 innings allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts. Stoeser got the final two outs which included a strikeout to end it.
Pierre is now 7-2 overall and 6-1 in South Dakota games. The Govs will host Jefferson on Friday with first pitch at 5:00 and coverage starting at 4:45 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Dylan Simmons on the call.
