The Pierre Governors had to battle through 10 innings against Aberdeen and came away with a 3-2 win in the only game played Thursday night for the home opener at Hyde Stadium.
Pierre would get on the board first with a two out error committed by Aberdeen as Dawson Getz would ground into a fielder’s choice but Sutton Sonnenschein would score on a throwing error. Aberdeen would take a 2-1 lead in the fourth inning on a lead off homer run by Grant Beyer, but the Govs would answer back on a Porter Hunsley sacrifice fly in the bottom of the fourth. The next five innings would be scoreless as Weston Northrup would throw six and 1/3 innings allowing two runs on seven hits with four strikeouts. Will Danburg would throw the final three and 2/3 innings allowing just one hit with one walk and four strikeouts. In the bottom of the tenth, Ridge Leimbach would lead off with a single and Jarren Deal would run for him. Trevor Rounds grounded out to advance Deal to second and then Hunsley would get a base hit into centerfield. Deal would slip halfway between third and home, but the throw was wide of the catcher allowing Deal to still score without a play and give the Governors a walk off win to go to 5-0 in South Dakota games and 6-1 overall. Aberdeen falls to 2-1 on the season.
Game two would start, but would be called after just a half inning due the field conditions worsening and cold temperatures.
Pierre will host Mitchell on Monday for a matinee with first pitch at 1:00. Coverage will begin at 12:45 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
