PIERRE, (KCCR) — The local election scene is coming into focus local for governments this spring. The petition deadline passed Friday for the Pierre City Commission and Pierre School Board. Other than incumbents Joan Adam and Jessica Lewis submitting petitions no other candidates took out petitions meaning there will be no election for Pierre School Board. That is not the case for the Pierre City Commission. Five individuals have filed petitions to run for two at-large spots on the Commission. Vona Johnson is not seeking re-election and Blake Barringer is running again as the only incumbent in the race. Kevin Larsen announced his candidacy earlier this year. Also putting their hat in the ring are former Pierre City Engineer John Childs, Matthew Reitzel and Robin Lerseth. The Pierre City Commission election will be June 3rd. In Fort Pierre, only one Ward will see an election. Callie Iverson is being challenged in Ward II by Mike Johnson. That election is April 8th. This will likely be the final April election for the Fort Pierre City Council. A bill sponsored by Representative Will Mortenson to push all elections to either the Primary or General election was signed by Governor Larry Rhoden earlier this week.
