The Pierre Governor basketball teams would both be unable to come a high scoring team in the Roosevelt Roughriders on Friday as the boys would fall 72-61 while the girls dropped a 62-54 decision.
In the girls game on the road, Pierre struggled to score in the first quarter trailing 13-7, but Emery Larson would have 11 in the second quarter to pick up the scoring pace, however, the Govs stilled trailed by nine 33-24 at the break. A fury at the end of the third brought the Govs back within seven after three which included a half court shot by Lennix DuPris on her way to a game high 28 points. Pierre closed the gap to a three point game in the fourth, but late threes and buckets by Roosevelt left the Governors to overcome the big deficit. Henlee Loof made six threes in the game for a team high 20 points including a three from the Roughrider logo which turned into a dagger. Freshman Kalli Harris had 19 and Brooklyn Koll had 10 for the Roughriders who finish the season at 8-12. Larson had 16 for Pierre as her and DuPris were the two in double figurers as Pierre falls to 11-8 with its final game hosting Watertown.
In the first Quarter of the boys game, both teams gave it their all with incredible back and forth stretches. The two teams were hardly ever separated by more than five points in the early portion of the game, and both teams relied on their heavy hitters to make an impact. Sawyer Sonnenschein and Dawson Getz were electric with two three pointers a piece to keep Pierre right with Roosevelt.
The second Quarter was a different story as the Roughriders ended up going on a 15 point unanswered run from down five to go up 10. After dominant firsts, Sonnenschein and Getz were limited in their production. It would be the Luke Olson show instead as he maintained the scoring pace for the Govs. At the half Pierre found themselves down by seven, and would not be able to completely crawl their way out of that deficit for the rest of the game.
A surplus of fouls cost Pierre in the final quarter and many of the shots that were falling early for Pierre, were not in the fourth. In the end, it would be enough for Roosevelt to garner an 11 point win and move to 9-11 to finish off their regular season. They were led in scoring by a sensational performance off the bench from Bryson Skorsberg and 4 double digit scorers.
Olson and Getz combined for 37 points in their final home game as a duo. Pierre drops to 6-13 and now looks ahead to their final regular season game against Watertown.
Both games tip off at 2:00 on Saturday. The boys game will be on KCCR and the girls on Capital City Rock. Both games will be on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
