Both Pierre Governor basketball teams would be unable to get a win against the Jefferson Cavaliers on Tuesday as the girls would drop the home game 70-60 while the boys would fall 78-64.
Both games the Cavaliers shot great in different aspects. The girls were outstanding from the free throw line while the boys would shoot well from the field. In the girls game, Pierre quickly went down 8-2, but went on an 18-0 run to lead 20-8 in the first minute of the second quarter, but the Cavs battled back to tie the game at 29 at the break. Jefferson started the third with its own big run to create the separation the Govs couldn’t overcome. The Cavs were an unbelievable 24-28 from the free throw line including 14-15 through the first three quarters. Abby Horner had a career night at 25 points including 13-14 from the charity stripe. Brinley Altenburg had 22 as the two players in double figures. Lennix DuPris had the team high 15 and Gracelyn Taylor had 12 as the zone defense from the Cavs forced more threes from Pierre although hitting 10 in the game. Pierre falls to 11-7 and the Cavs improve to 10-9.
In the boys game, Pierre had to try and overcome the Cavaliers hot shooting as Jefferson led 42-28 at the end of the first half on the way to picking up its eighth win of the season. Five players hit double figures for Jefferson as they were led by Kuai Mayen’s 17 points while Jose Unzen had 16 and the trio of Mason Payne, Colby Nuttbrock and Damaris Fields each had 10.
