Trailing the majority of the game, the Sully Buttes Charger girls fought back in the fourth quarter and took the lead for good with less than two minutes remaining to stun the Waverly-South Shore Coyotes 38-36 Saturday afternoon at the Warner Classic.
The Chargers started slow, trailing 13-7 after the first quarter, and came back stronger in the second scoring 14 points, but still were behind 23-21 at the half. Sully Buttes went cold in the third quarter but held Waverly/South Shore down as well and were still down 30-25 after three.
In the fourth quarter, the Chargers were able to shake leading scorer Payge Bakker free as she scored 11 of the Chargers 13 in the final stanza to take the lead with time ticking down in the game. The Coyotes resorted to fouling to slow the pace dow, but both leading scorers fouled out, and Sully Buttes was able to run the clock out to pick up the win.
Bakker led all Sully Buttes scorers once again with 21 points while Olivia Olson and Scottlynn Kinney each contributing six points along with key defensive stops for the 8-10 Chargers.
Waverly-South Shore was led by low post players Jaina Johnson and Carlee Mushitz, who each tallied 11 points for the 7-10 Coyotes.
Next up for Sully Buttes is a girls and boys doubleheader Tuesday at Sunshine Bible Academy. The next Charger broadcast on Country 95.3FM is Thursday in Faulkton for the last doubleheader of the season.
