The Pierre Governors took the top team in AA Basketball to deep water in boys basketball action on Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately did not have quite enough to keep up with the Patriots in a 74-51 loss.
In the first half, the game was as explosive as a volcano with a combined 70 points between the two teams. Pierre was led by tremendous offensive team play from Sawyer Sonnenschein, who nailed a couple of triples, and Luke Olson who returned to form with 9 points in the first two quarters. They were able to keep up with a high-flying Lincoln offense led by Sam Erricson who shot the lights out with three threes on his way to 14 total points. Lincoln would lead 37-33 at the end of the half, but then the second half would change things completely.
The Patriots dominated the third by outsourcing Pierre 26-5. A majority of that was thanks to the interior play of Luke Krempges and Sam Degroot, who would each end up with double digit scoring in the game. This led to a 25 point deficit for Pierre entering the 4th quarter, a deficit that they would be unable to overcome. Lincoln would hold off any and all Pierre rallies on their way to a home win.
Pierre drops to 5-10 overall while Lincoln moves to 16-1 on the season. Pierre will now look ahead to Senior Night Tuesday at Home with a chance to get back in the win column against the winless Brookings Bobcats.
