The Pierre Governor girls used a dominating first half to cruise to a 63-35 win in Huron while the boys would fall 60-50 at home on Tuesday.
In the girls game, the Govs held Huron without a field goal in the first quarter leading 15-1. Pierre forced 12 first quarter turnovers and 27 overall for the game as the Tigers couldn’t handle the Govs tight defense both in the back court and in the front court. Emery Larson had a game high 13 points as the Govs built a 37-15 lead at the half. The Govs never trailed in the game. Addison Soma had 11 points and Gracelyn Taylor added 10 with six steals. Chloe Carr was the only player in double figures for the Tigers as she had 10. Pierre improves to 8-6 on the season while the Tigers fall to 6-8. Pierre will be off until next Tuesday when they travel to Brookings.
Like many of their recent games, Pierre hung right in with Huron in a tightly contested first half. Defense was the name of the game as both teams scored below average by their standards for most of the first two quarters. Two players rose above everyone else to emerge as superstars not just for the half, but for the game. Lincoln Dilges had a career outing with 21 total points while Huron’s Blake Ellwein used every bit of his 6’9 height to dominate the competition on his way to a game-high 25 points.
The second half is when the Tigers began to put some space between themselves and the Governors. In the third Quarter, Ellwein and Davis Chase would take over on their way to building a lead as high as 15. One big difference was the volume shooting from long range, which Huron possessed while Pierre did not. Huron moves to 11-5 on the season while Pierre drops to 5-9.
The Governors next test will be in Sioux Falls on Saturday at 2:00 PM against the Lincoln Patriots. The lone boys game will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
