Charger Girls, Boys Hoops Team Swept in Miller

The Sully Buttes Chargers showed up at the Armory in Miller to take on the Rustlers, but forgot to pack their shooting skills. Cold shooting by both the girls and boys cost them games as the Charger girls fell 50-28 while the boys dropped a 60-52 contest.

The Charger girls had a horrendous first half, trailing 25-7 at the break, but came out in the second half and put together a much better effort, but had too much ground to make up. Trailing 38-15 after three quarters, Miller kept the pace to their liking and capitalized on 23 Charger turnovers to push their season mark to 7-2 while Sully Buttes fell to 4-6 on the season.

Balanced scoring by the Rustler girls showed Paige Werdel leading the way with 13 points while Madelyn Salenga added 10. Payge Bakker once again was Sully Buttes top scorer with nine points while Olivia Olson hit for eight on the night.

And as hot as the Charger boys were Tuesday night, they bricked their way through the ballgame, and the Rustler boys showed superior ball movement and rebounding to seal Sully Buttes fate.

The Charger boys trailed 28-27 at the half, but fell back 46-39 after three quarters. William Resel led all scorers with 24 points while Izaak Hunter added 20 for the 5-4 Rustlers.

Sully Buttes falls to 4-3 on the season and were led in scoring by Wesley Wittler’s 22 points and three Chargers ended their night with nine points apiece.

Next up for Sully Buttes is a home doubleheader against the Timber Lake Panthers with the girls game to start at about 6:15, with the boys game to follow. The Charger girls have had five games on the road and five at home, while six of the seven boys games this season have been on the road. Four of the next five for Sully Buttes boys is in Onida. Games can be heard on Country 95.3FM with DT Meyer on the call.
