The 2024-25 season is set to start tonight as the Pierre Governor girls and boys basketball teams will get games on Friday and Saturday against the Rapid City Schools as the girls travel and the boys host.
Tonight, the Governor girls will take on Rapid City Stevens, a team who they split with last year. Pierre dropped the first game of the season to Stevens, but beat them in the state tournament on the way to a fifth place consolation title. As the year begins, the Governors will be without Reese Terwilliger, Ryann Barry, Aleise Christopherson, Brianna Sargent and Lavin Price after graduation. Pierre brings back Lennix DuPris, Gracelyn Taylor and Grace Richter who had significant playing time while Addison Soma and Carley Malm are the other seniors for this year’s squad. On the other side tonight, Stevens loses only Isabelle Higgins and brings every one back. Notably, Taaliyah Porter will be back for the Raiders. For Rapid City Central on Saturday, the Cobblers have just two seniors after graduating five going 10-11 in 23-24. The Cobblers have some transfers coming in which makes them more unknown heading into the year. Kirk Beebout, head coach of the Governor girls team says they are going to find out who this Pierre team is…
Beebout says wins and losses aside, attitude will be a big key to a successful weekend to open the season…
The Governor boys will have a new look heading into the season. The Governors finished 10-11 last year and graduated Tyan Buus, Jett Zabel, Cade Kaiser and Miles Doyle, but also lose sophomore Cooper Terwilliger for the year with a shoulder injury sustained in football. Luke Olson, Dawson Getz, Sawyer Sonnenschein and Eladio Simental return with significant playing time. Brianna Kusler, head coach of the boys team, says with the size the Governors have this year, the pace will be quicker…
Stevens will have seven seniors after going 12-9 last year falling in the SoDak 16 to Jefferson. Stevens clipped the Governors 44-39 last year to open the season. Central will come in going 2-18 last season. The Cobblers only had wins against Douglas and Brookings last year and will bring in four seniors but will only have seniors and juniors on this year’s roster. Kusler says this weekend the defensive tone needs to be set from the opening tip…
