PIERRE, (KCCR) — The Oahe Downstream Recreation Area will be closed for the most part this weekend to allow for the 32nd annual Oahe Hunt. The Oahe Hunt is a special hunting opportunity specifically geared toward hunters whose mobility is by wheelchair. Oahe Downstream will be closed Saturday, November 23rd and Sunday, November 24th for a twelve hour period both days from six-am to six-pm. Entrance to Downstream will be limited during those times to participating hunters, hunt volunteers and staff for safety reasons. The entrance will be barricaded from Highway 1806 to the Stilling Basin bridge. Staff will be restricting traffic at 1806 and the West Shore toe road. Campground Three will be open for park guests. The East Shore toe road off Highway 1804 will allow access to the powerhouse and tailrace areas, but the road will be blocked at the bottom. The hunt is sponsored by the South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks Department and U-S Army Corps of Engineers. It is the only time hunting is permitted in the Oahe Downstream Rec area during the fall hunting season.
