Governors Historic Season Ends as Lincoln Sneaks by in Overtime

The best season for the Pierre Governor boys soccer team since the sport has been sanctioned by the state would come to an end in the quarterfinals on Saturday in Sioux Falls as the two seed Lincoln would escape the seven seed Govs 2-1 in overtime.

Caiden Ahartz and the Governors wasted no time in scoring the first goal of the game as Jacoby LaRoche would send Ahartz forward and scoring just two and a half minutes into the contest. Luka Tomic would score with 17 minutes remaining in the first half and the two teams would remain deadlock after eighty minutes of regulation. In overtime, Brady Stamp would score at the top of the box just 37 seconds into overtime to give the Patriots their first lead of the game and even with a red card for taunting on Isaac Herrboldt at the end of the first 10 minutes over overtime, the Patriots survived the final 10 minute overtime session playing a man down to beat Pierre.

The Governors were outshot 19-7, but Jacob Leiferman had 10 saves for the Govs with some incredible stops to keep the Govs in the game throughout the afternoon.

Pierre ends the season at 10-4-2 while Lincoln advances to the semifinals as the defending state champions will face six seeded Aberdeen Central Tuesday as the Golden Eagles upset three seed Jefferson 3-2.
