The Pierre Governor volleyball team had to comeback from a 4-0 fifth set deficit to beat the Mitchell Kernels at home on Tuesday winning 25-22, 21-25, 25-22, 23-25 and 15-13.
The scores were exactly the indication of how close the night was as both teams never got more than a five point lead on the other in any set. Pierre finished with 52 total kills led by Campbell Cronin and Jaycee Bauer who had 14 and 13 respectively. Hadley Hart finished with five aces to lead the team serving. Pierre’s lone set struggle was the fourth as they had 11 hitting errors with only 13 combined in the other four sets. However, Pierre had 16 kills, their most in any set as they couldn’t close out the Kernels. The momentum was shifted in Mitchell’s favor with a 4-0 fifth set advantage, but the Governors rattled off seven of the next nine points to take the lead which they held on to for the rest of the night. Mitchell was led in kills by Addie Siemsen with 14 while Lauren VanOverschelde had 10 as they combined for 24 of the 34 kills in total.
The Governors have a win streak at three and are now 3-2 while the Kernels drop its sixth straight to fall to 1-6. Pierre will travel to Sturgis and Spearfish this weekend for a Friday and Saturday contest. Friday’s match starts with a 7:00 Central time first serve while Saturday’s will have a 2:00 first serve which will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
