Both the Pierre Governor boys and girls soccer teams would get wins on a historic night Thursday over Sturgis as the boys would hold on for a 2-1 win and the girls would dominate to a 7-0 victory.
In the boys contest, the Governors dominated the game early on in the first half and while Sturgis goalie, Christian Lemke was holding off every chance the Govs threw at him, Pierre finally cracked through just past the midway point of the first on a corner kick from Jacoby LaRoche and headed in by Alex Oedekoven. Caleb Morris would then use the wind and a long shot from the side, floating over and in the back of the net to give the Govs a 2-0 lead in the first half. Sturgis would score late in the second half on a long free kick to pull the Scoopers within one, but Jacob Leiferman and the Governors would shut the door and secure its second win of the season.
In the girls contest, Pierre was dominant throughout. Jersey Understock would get the first goal of the game of a rebounded shot, then would assist the second goal to Katie Hostler to make it 2-0 for the Govs. Gracelyn Taylor would pick off a pass in the box and Pierre had a 3-0 lead at the break. Devyn Van Roekel would score the first goal of the second half. Taylor would score her second of the game on a breakaway and Lexie Hilmer would score on a penalty kick and Zoie Bauer would score her first varsity career goal to make it 7-0 and send the Govs to a 3-0 record. Emelyn Swanson would get the shutout.
Pierre will have two more games this weekend traveling out to Rapid City to face Stevens and Central. Pierre will face Stevens tonight with girls kicking off at 6:00 and the boys to follow. Then on Saturday the boys will face Central first at 11:00 and the girls to follow. All times Central.
