JJ Bucholz and Cooper Terwilliger each went complete games on Sunday to help Pierre beat Renner Sultans 3-2 and Yankton Post 12 7-2 to finish the regular season on a high note, sweeping the day.
The first two batters in the bottom of the first reached with a walk and a bunt single and came into score on a bases loaded walk and sacrifice fly to give the Renner Sultans a 2-0 lead in the first game. It was all Bucholz allowed the rest of the game. Bucholz gave up two bunt singles in the first and then two hits, one in the sixth and one in the seventh as he went all seven innings on 100 pitches allowing two runs on four hits with five walks and two strikeouts. It was the top of the fifth when the Eights would get their runs as Nolan Petersen would double home Pierre’s first run and then score as Carter Scheifelbein would tie the game with a sacrifice fly. Sutton Sonnenschein would single putting runs at first and third and then stole second and as the throw went to second, Petersen sprinted home to execute the double steal to get the lead and win. Pierre had six hits in the game one win.
In game two, Yankton again would get the first two batters on, with a single and double and had two sacrifice flies to give Post 12 a 2-0 lead. But it was all Terwilliger would allow. The two hits were the only two given up in the game as he allowed just two walks and a hit batter the rest of the game. Petersen would get the first RBI of the game again, this time in the top of the second on a comebacker that went off the glove of the starting pitcher Kael Garry knocking his glove off and away from anybody to make a play. Sonnenschein would then give the Eights the lead with a two run two out single. The Eights weren’t done for the game there. They added three runs again in the third as Dawson Getz would triple home two runs to give Pierre a 6-2 advantage through three. Getz would record his third hit and third RBI in the fourth tacking on the final run as Pierre finishes the 7-2 win and wins three of the last four games of the season.
Pierre finishes the regular season at 10-28 and 9-16 in South Dakota games. The opponent will be determined after the games conclude on Monday and the postseason bracket will be set.
