Pierre’s Ryen Sheppick would win three different individual state championships at the 2024 Rodeo State Championships in Ft. Pierre at the Stanley County Fairgrounds.
Sheppick would win the titles in breakaway roping with a total of 64 points, girl’s cutting at 82 and reined cow horse at a total of 89. Sheppick also competed in pole bending and barrel racing.
Sheppick, though, was not the only area athlete to take home first place at the Rodeo finals. Talon Ping of Highmore would win bareback riding totaling 84 points while Talon Yellow Hawk of Blunt would place second at 79 points. Yellow Hawk also placed sixth in bull riding. Tommie Martin of Hayes would also win pole bending with a total of 69 points, 8.5 points ahead of second place. Paden Belkham of Blunt would win the tiedown championship with a total of 74 points, four ahead of second.
Other top area finishers would be Makenzee Wheelhouse of Pierre finishing in third in bareback racing while Gabriyelle Irving was eighth. Wheelhouse was also seventh in goat tying. Ethan Johnson of Hoven would finish in third at saddle bronc and Abilene McGuire of Gettysburg was tenth in breakaway roping and Pierre’s Tristen Spencer tenth in tiedown.

2024 South Dakota High School Rodeo State Championships
