Pierre Post 8 had excellent pitching on Friday in Brookings, but the offensive could only get one run and three hits in two games falling 1-0 and 2-1 to the Bandits to open the season.
Pierre had just one hit and three base runners in all of game one as Trevor Rounds would reach on an infield single as the Eights only hit. But Miles Doyle would deal on the mound to open the season as he finished the day with six and 2/3 innings with only three hits, two walks and had 13 strike outs as he and Breck Wilson went inning for inning in a pitcher’s dual. Wilson would go all eight innings as the scoreless tied bled over into the eighth inning, where, with the bases loaded and two outs, Tane Fredreich would get hit with the pitch in the walk off win in the bottom of the eighth.
In game two, Zach Struck would ground out to score Breck Hirrschoff after he tripled in the bottom of the third and a sacrifice fly from Tate Helmbolt in the fourth gave Brookings a 2-1 lead. In the top of the fifth, Pierre had their first hit, a two out bases loaded infield single from Grayson Hunsley to score Charlie Simpson to make it 2-1. Nolan Petersen would lead off the seventh with a single, the second and final hit of the game and was stranded at second to close the ballgame. Cooper Terwilliger would five and 2/3 innings allowing just four hits, two runs on five walks and a strikeout. JJ Bucholz pitched in both games giving up the one unearned run in game one and throwing a single pitch to get out of the sixth in game two. David Brink and Helmbolt combined for the win as Brink went six innings and Helmbolt picked up the save.
Pierre begins the season at 0-2 and will face Renner on Tuesday in the home opener. Coverage will start at 4:45 with first pitch at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
