Two outstanding starts from Pierre Governor pitchers and a three run homer by Charlie Simpson in game two would lead the Govs to a 7-0 and 8-2 doubleheader sweep of the Mitchell Kernels on Monday.
In game one, Pierre would get its first run on a JJ Bucholz RBI single in the top of the second before Simpson would get his first of five RBIs on the day in the top of the third to make it 2-0. Nolan Petersen and Jett Zabel each had an RBI in the Governor four run fourth to extend the lead for good as Miles Doyle went six shutout innings on the mound allowing just two hits, one walk with 12 strikeouts. Trevor Rounds would get the final three outs in game one.
In the second game, Mitchell would take a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly which would hold up until the third when Simpson had an RBI double to tie the game. In the sixth, Simpson came to the plate and with second and third would send a 1-0 pitch out past the left field fence for a three run shot, his first of the year to give Pierre the lead for good, up 4-1. Pierre would tack on another four runs in the seventh as Zabel would go six innings allowing one earned run on two hits, five walks and five strikeouts, Bucholz would get the final three outs striking out two.
Pierre improves to 9-4 on the season with the sweep and will face Brookings on Friday in the final road games of the season. First pitch of the doubleheader is at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler on the call.
