With the Deubrook Area Dolphins leading 6-0 at the half, the Philip Scotties roared back, only to fall 18-14 for a spot in the Class 9A Championship Thursday in Vermillion.
A 91 yard run by running back Gavin Landmark for Deubrook Area gave the Dolphins the lead on their first possession of the game and in the second half, the Dolphins got another Landmark score, this time from four yards out to go up 12-0. On their next possession, Deubrook Area went up 18-0 on a Jace Vomacka to Landmark 51 yard pass.
The Scotties then came to life with a Travis Terkildsen touchdown to make it 18-6. Then on their next possession, senior quarterback Lane Kuchenbecker scored on a 36 yard run to make it 18-12 Dolphins. After forcing Deubrook deep on the ensuing kickoff, the Scotties’ Jensen Fitch tackled Vomacka in the endzone for a safety to make it 18-14 Dolphins.
Philip had the ball with under 90 seconds left to play, and from the Deubrook 40 yard line with time running out, the Scotties had three attempts at the end zone, but came up short each time.
Deubrook will now face Warner in the 9A championship, and ups their mark to 8-3, while the Scotties season ends at 10-1.
