In a press release on Wednesday, South Dakota’s Attorney General Marty Jackley would confirm the State Division of Criminal Investigation and assisting agencies are involved with an ongoing investigation of complaints around the Mitchell American Legion baseball program.
With it being confirmed at the beginning of the team suspension, minors are involved in the case, therefore no information is given on what the allegations are specifically. Jackley says in the release with all criminal complaints they are being taken seriously, however, no formal charges have been filed against the subjects of the investigation at this time and are presumed innocent. Jackley says both parties deserve a complete and thorough investigation and prosecuting authorities including Pennington County’s State’s Attorney Lara Roetzel are doing a further review of the allegations and evidence.
Jackley says he hopes the work doesn’t unnecessarily interfere with the opportunity for the team members who have worked hard, to continue participation in the baseball program this season. He encourages the work be done safely and this does not happen again.

Mitchell has not played since June 20 a day after playing Pierre Post 8 at Hyde Stadium. The two teams were scheduled to play on Wednesday, but the game was canceled and will not be rescheduled. The end of the regular season is on Monday, July 17 and the playoffs begin Friday, July 21.
