Wednesday night between the doubleheader for Post 8 and Rapid City Post 22, the Russ Snyder Memorial Scholarship would be awarded to Jonny Lyons, the lone senior on this year’s team.
The Russ Snyder Memorial Scholarship would begin after Snyder passed away in 2000 which was started by Jim Trimble. Snyder played for Post 8 senior legion in 1974-1975 before playing baseball at the University of South Dakota and being an All-Conference player his junior and senior year for the Coyotes. Trimble wanted to do something to keep the memory of Russ alive and started the scholarship fund which will go to a senior or multiple seniors every year. Lyons, the lone senior, received the scholarship, but not without the stats and good-will to back it up. He currently leads the team in RBIs, doubles and home runs and is near the top in batting average. He’s embraced the role as one of just three old guys with two other super seniors.
Along with the scholarship being awarded every year, each senior every year receives a bat in memory of Snyder.
