PIERRE — Authorities in Pierre are investigating a crash Wednesday that closed Fourth Street for nearly 10 hours. Fourth Street was closed from Governor’s Drive past Mickelson Pond and to Wellington Drive. A dark colored sports utility vehicle struck a large steel electric transmission tower causing the tower to lean over at nearly a 45 degree angle. The crash also caused the closure of a walking path between Mickelson Pond and Hilger’s Gulch. Additional information about the crash has not been released by the Pierre Police Department, however Captain Bryan Walz has confirmed that the crash was not fatal. An ambulance could be seen leaving the scene slowly with it’s lights on, but siren not activated. Responding to the crash were the Pierre Police, Hughes County Sheriff, Pierre Rescue Squad, A-M-R Ambulance. Fourth Street was reopened around 11 pm Wednesday night.
