PIERRE — It’s officially open season on airline bids for Pierre and Watertown. Last Thursday the United States Transportation Department issued an order requesting proposals to provide service through the Essential Air Service program. Airlines will have about a month to submit proposals to serve Pierre, Watertown or both communities together. The order states that US-DOT expects proposals to meet basic E-A-S requirements and consistent with the current contract held by Denver Air Connection; which in the case of Pierre is 12 weekly round trip flights in 30 to 50 seat aircraft. The order also states that air carriers are encouraged to work with communities to craft proposals that meet the community needs. It also says the Department will fully consider the views of communities and states before making a decision. Carriers can also submit proposals with longer terms and different hub airports, as long as they fit requirements. Airlines have until December 19th to submit proposals.
