CHAMBERLAIN — After 10 months out of custody, an inmate in the South Dakota Department of Corrections system is back behind bars. The Department of Corrections says Liberty Briley was apprehended by the United States Marshals Service Thursday. He is currently being held in the Brule County Jail in Chamberlain. Briley will be held there until he can be transported back to Sioux Falls. Briley and three other inmates left the Sioux Falls Community Work Center without clearance on September 4th of 2020. The other two inmates, Joseph Davis and Kevan Whiteman were found and returned to the Department of Corrections previously. Briley found his way into the Department of Corrections system by way of a five year forgery sentence in Hughes County. Briley could face another five year prison term as leaving a non-secure correctional facility without authorization is considered second degree escape. That Class Five felony carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison.
