OMAHA, NE — The US Army Corps of Engineers is planning a number of prescribed burns on Corps of Engineers property around the Oahe Dam in the next few weeks. The grassland burns will depend on weather conditions at several restoration sites like wind, temperature, relative humidity, smoke dispersal and an appropriate number of local fire departments for local assistance. In addition to the restoration sites, several areas on the dam’s embankment will be burned to reduce litter for dam inspection service. Access to burning areas will be restricted during burn operations. Travel may have to be restricted along South Dakota Highways 1806 and 204, which is Crest Road, over the dam if smoke from embankment fires limits visibility. No specific dates and times for the burning have been announced.
