Opening Day for Pierre High School Baseball out West

For the first time in 683 days the Pierre Governor High School Baseball team will be on the field again as they face both Rapid City Stevens and Central in the first two doubleheaders of the year.

The Governors are bringing back experience but far from the amount which would have opened up the 2020 season. Pierre had just one senior graduate in 2019, Jack Maher but lost nine players to graduation before ever taking the field again due to the Covid-19 pandemic. Now, the team will rely on guys who were sophomores but now seniors to be leaders this year.

Steve Gray, head coach of the Pierre Governors, says defense is extremely important early on in the season…

Gray says, though, he’s liking what he’s seen in the off season offensively…

Maguire Raske was injured last summer and only threw once all season, now he looks to get back to being on the mound again, although the process will be building up to it. Gray says they’ve been working with Raske…

And Gray says they need to go and compete this weekend…

First pitch of the doubleheaders are scheduled for 5:00 on Friday and 1:00 on Saturday, both Central Times. All four games can be heard on Today’s KCCR, todayskccr.com and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Greg Dean on the call.
