On Friday night, the Pierre Governors Baseball team would put its number one ranking in the state of South Dakota on the line against the Jefferson Cavaliers, who came in with a 6-2 record in South Dakota play against 6-1 Pierre team. Jefferson would win 1-0 and 2-1.
The first game moved at an exceptionally quick pace as the two starting pitchers led the way to a 0-0 deadlock through the majority of the game. J.J. Bucholz put the Governors on his back with clutch play after clutch play and was backed up by an exceptional defense that kept the Cavaliers offense at bay. However, he would be countered by a superstar performance from Ethan Biggar who would keep Pierre’s offense packed in and unable to break out. There was not a single extra base hit between the two teams for most of the game, and in total only 7 hits would be administered combined. Towards the end of the game, Jefferson would manage to finally break through with a run scored from Nick Kuenzi off a Governors’ 6th Inning error that would spring the Cavs to victory by a score of 1-0.
In the second game, it would be a very similar story as both starting pitchers, Hudson Stoeser and Everett Salonen, would dominate the first half of the game with magic from the mound. The two offenses had glimpses of breaking through with the occasional single or walk, but were never able to completely break the seal. That was until the 5th Inning, when Pierre would finally find form courtesy of Porter Hunsley with an RBI Single to give the Governors their first run in 12 innings of play. However, that momentum would not last as the Cavs were right behind with a run in the top of the 6th and the 7th to give themselves a 2-1 advantage. Another Pierre error would cost them late in the seventh to ultimately give Jefferson a lead they would never relinquish. Despite a 6 ⅔ Inning performance from Stoeser with only two earned runs given up, Pierre could not avoid falling in game two. Pierre is now 6-3 in South Dakota play, and have to regroup as they look ahead against the Huron Tigers at Home.
Monday’s doubleheader with Huron has been postponed to Tuesday. Coverage will still begin at 4:45 with first pitch at 5:00 on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
