Former Oahe Capital Carter Sanderson and the Muskegon Lumberjacks are advancing to the USHL Eastern Conference Semifinals with a 4-1 win Wednesday night over the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders.
The Lumberjacks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period and played tight defense the rest of the way when the RoughRiders were going to be pushing full tilt trying to overcome the four goal deficit. Teddy Spitznagel scored the first goal of the game as Sanderson’s line was starting to make a change as he would finish with a +/- of 1 having also two shots on goal in the win. For the first time in three games, Muskegon outshot its opponent 34-31 after they started the game 21-5 in the first period. The Lumberjacks were also 2-2 on the power play.
The win advances Muskegon to the Eastern Conference Semifinals to face the top team in conference, the Youngstown Phantoms. The best-of-five series will start in Youngstown Saturday and Sunday before moving to Muskegon for game three on Tuesday and if necessary, game four on Wednesday. The decisive game five would be played on Friday back in Youngstown.
