The Pierre Governor baseball team will be at home for the first time in 2025 as they host the Aberdeen Smittys High School baseball team this evening.
Aberdeen is playing High School baseball again after not playing for the last several years. Aberdeen did win back-to-back state championships in 2007-2008 when Mark Gulseth and John Krogstrand were coaching. Now, Aberdeen is 2-0 to start the season with wins over Rapid City Central 23-8 and 20-5 on Sunday. In the two wins, Aberdeen had 10 extra base hits and had 34 RBIs of the 43 runs which scored. While still having a long way to go in the season, Pierre has opened up the season at 5-1 and 4-0 in South Dakota games sitting atop the South Dakota standings through the first three weeks of the season. The Govs will start to ramp up with more games as they will play today and again on Monday at home. Over the course of the six games, Pierre is averaging six hits and five free passes. Pierre is led in hitting by Sutton Sonnenschein who is batting .462 with a triple and an inside the park grand slam.
Coverage this evening with begin at 4:45 with first pitch at 5:00 at Hyde Stadium. Games can be heard on KCCR and you can watch them on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Jon Winkler and Blake Dean on the call.
