
PIERRE, (KCCR) — Drought conditions in South Dakota took a turn in the right direction last week. Thursday’s release of the U-S Drought Monitor for the state showed reductions in drought. Extreme drought fell back four percent to two-point-eight percent statewide, including complete removal from Mellette and Jackson Counties. Severe drought fell by 29-percent and moderate drought by 11-percent. In Hughes County, severe drought fell 24-percent while moderate drought went from 100 to 52-percent. Stanley County saw smaller drought reductions from 96 to 91-percent severe and 100 to 97-percent moderate drought. A lobe of abnormally dry areas are depicted this week from northeast Lyman, northwest Buffalo, southeast Stanley, eastern Hughes and much of Hand and Hyde County, south of U-S Highway 14. Severe drought fell by 70-percent in Lyman County and moderate by 15-percent. Driving the improvement has been normal to above normal precipitation over the last 30 to 60 days.
