The Pierre Governor softball team would fall 9-7 to the Yankton Gazelles on Thursday in its home opener as 12 of the combine 16 runs would score in the late innings.
Pierre would score a run in each of the second, third and fourth, to lead 3-1 over the Gazelles at the midway point of the game. Noel Kist had an RBI walk in the second, Amber Roman an RBI double in the third and Charlotte Hull would score on an error in the fourth. Yankton would then score three runs in the fifth to take a 4-2 lead, but the Governors would come back with a three run sixth to lead 5-4 as Alivia Heymans would double home a run to pull within one and Ireland Templeton had a two out two RBI single to make 5-4. The Gazelles, though, would score five runs in the top of the seventh and Pierre had the bases loaded after Elly Broers walked to make it 9-7, but couldn’t get the tying run home.
Yankton had six of their 12 hits go for extra bases as Kyra Tjeerdsma had two doubles and three hits overall, driving in four runs for the Gazelles who are now 2-1 on the season. Pierre drops to 0-2 as Kist would pitch the first five innings allowing four runs, three earned on six hits, a walk and eight strikeouts. McKenzi Flottmeyer would throw the final two innings allowing five runs, four earned on six hits with three strikeouts.
Pierre will travel to Watertown next Tuesday. First pitch is at 4:00.
