PIERRE, (KCCR) — The South Dakota Legislature has upheld a veto by Governor Larry Rhoden. Rhoden vetoed House Bill 1169, that would have required petition signatures from all 35 Senate districts in the state. The House overrode the veto 50 to 18 sending the measure to the Senate. In the Senate, Senator Tom Pischke says the bill gives more voters input in the Constitutional amendment process…
Senator David Wheeler says the bill exceeds the power of the Legislature…
Senator Michael Rohl of Aberdeen says the bill takes power from the people…
The Senate vote on the veto was 16-16. The veto override failed as three senators were absent from the final day of the 100th South Dakota Legislature. The legislature upheld both of Rhoden’s vetoes this year.
