The New Mexico Ice Wolves would finish 2-0 in its pool on Friday with a 4-2 win over the Helena Big Horns and will now be the higher seed against a familiar opponent on Saturday in the semifinals, the Louisiana Drillers.
It was a 3-0 lead into the third period for the Ice Wolves as they scored two in the first and then made it 4-1 late in the third period to help seal off the win and go 2-0 in pool play advancing to the NA3HL Fraser Cup Semifinals. The Ice Wolves were out shot 40-29, but still were able to find the back of the net. It sets up a massive semifinal against the Drillers, an opponent in their division. The Ice Wolves lost both games to the Drillers 4-1 and 2-1 in the Division Finals last week, but a win will propel them to the Fraser Cup Championship game. The Drillers are 1-1 in the tournament and only lost in regulation for the fourth team all season. The West Bend Power and Granite City Lumberjacks will play in the other semifinal.
Puck drop is at 4:00 this afternoon in St. Peter’s Missouri.
