The Pierre Governor baseball team would start the season with two wins on Friday beating the Stevens Raiders on the road 6-4 and 4-1.
The Governors opened up the top of the first with a 1-0 lead as Trevor Rounds would walk and move his way around the base paths on wild pitches and scoring on a balk as the Govs didn’t pick up their first hit until the fourth. However, Pierre went down 3-1 after the first inning as Ridge Leimbach struggled to find the strike zone in the first allowing five walks and a hit batter. He would, though, settle in to a stat line of four innings without allowing a hit on seven walks and six strikeouts. He faced the minimum in each of his last three innings of work. Parker O’Bryan had an RBI single in the fifth to cut the deficit to 3-2 and Dawson Getz tied the game with an RBI double in the sixth and then scored on a wild pitch and a two out error scored the final two runs as Pierre led 6-3. Getz would get the win on the mound finishing the final three innings allowing one run on three hits and a strikeout. Austin Flohr had an RBI single in the sixth for Stevens.
In game two, Pierre scored a run in each of the first three innings as Leimbach had an RBI fielder’s choice in the first and Getz with a sacrifice fly RBI in the third which scored Rounds from second. The Govs had just two hits with Carter Schiefelbein leading off the game with an infield single and Getz’s hit in the sixth. Will Danburg would be excellent on the mound going five innings allowing just one run on three hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Brennan McCollough would get the six out save with just two walks and two strikeouts.
The 2-0 Govs will head to Harrisburg on Friday for a doubleheader with the Tigers. First pitch is at 5:00 and games will be on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports with Dylan Simmons on the call.
