Team South Dakota would fall 6-1 to the Stockton St. Mary’s Rams of California on Thursday with special teams playing a big factor.
Four of the six goals scored by the Rams were on a special teams opportunity, but three of those four goals came short handed for Stockton. Stockton led 1-0 after the first and had a 2-0 lead when Oahe’s Brylee Kafka would score her first goal of the tournament coming on the power play as teammate Kallee Behm would get the assist. The two Capitals are now leading Team SD in points through two games. However, the Rams would make it 3-1 after two and then add three more goals in the third to cruise to a second game win as they are now 2-0 while Team SD is at 1-1. Brookings’ Rorii Quam made 17 saves on 23 shots in the loss.
Team SD will face the 2-0 Lovell Academy out of Massachusetts who have outscored their opponents 23-3 in two games. Even with a loss today, Team SD could still make the quarterfinals with some help.
