
PIERRE, (KCCR) — The lack of moisture during winter and so far into spring has created a noticeable increase in drought across South Dakota, especially central South Dakota. This week’s update of the U-S Drought Monitor for the state shows an 18-percent increase is D-Two Severe Drought. Jones County went from 40-percent to 100-percent severe drought in the last week. Severe drought in Stanley County has increased 96-percent. Only the far southeast corner is under moderate drought. Jackson County is now at least 100-percent in severe drought and still 19-percent under extreme drought. Severe drought is up 97-percent in Sully County and 100-percent in Potter, Dewey and Tripp Counties. There was no severe drought in Hughes County last week. This week, 45-percent of western Hughes County is under severe drought. Severe drought is up 20-percent in Lyman County to 80-percent and 27-percent in Ziebach County.
