PIERRE, (KCCR) — A former T-F Riggs High graduate is being honored by the American Association of School Administrators. Dr. Wendy Birhanzel graduated from Riggs in 1994. Her parents, Tom and Candy were both former teachers in Pierre School District. Birhanzel and school office administrator from Washington were both recognized recently with the 2025 Women in School Leadership Awards at the Second General Session of the A-A-S-A’s National Conference in New Orleans. Birhanzel is currently superintendent of the Harrison School District Two in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Birhanzel also received the Superintendent of the Year award in 2023 from the Colorado Association of School Executives and was named a Woman of Influence by the Colorado Springs Business Journal. According to the Business Journal, Birhanzel acts as a mentor to new superintendents in Colorado and serves on a number of boards in and around Colorado Springs. Birhanzel has been involved in public education for 20 years in California and Colorado.
