PIERRE, (KCCR) — The U-S-D-A Forest Service is preparing for prescribed burns in Lyman County in the Fort Pierre National Grasslands. The area includes 36 acres along U-S Highway 83 in the 83 Triangle Pasture, also known as the Kennedy Wildlife Area. There is no specific date for the burn, but it will take place on or after March 10th. The fires will be started only if weather conditions and firefighting personnel are present and available. The burns are conducted to increase the dominance and diversity of native vegetation and look to improve live stock forage and habitat for wildlife. Landowners, homeowners and local first responders will be notified prior to the burns. Smoke may be visible from Highway 83, Interstate 90 and the cities of Pierre, Fort Pierre, Draper, Murdo, Kennebec, Presho and Vivian. Anyone with questions can contact the Fort Pierre Ranger District at 605-224-5517.
