The State wrestling tournament will get underway today in Rapid City as individuals across the state look for state titles and podium finishes. Pierre, Sully Buttes and Stanley County will have plenty of representation across the board.
Pierre Wrestling
The Governor boys and girls wrestling teams will nearly have full teams at the state tournament this weekend. For the girls, all but one weight class will have a Governor in the tournament. Shaylee Speck in the 100, Layne Heasley in the 107, Gemma Stangeland in the 114, Dani Ringstmeyer in the 126, Lexie Hillmer in the 132, Kezrey Benning in the 138, Ireland Templeton in the 145, Abbi Lewis in the 152, Jayda Steinke in the 165, Kyanne Traversie-Johnson in the 185 and Brylee Pelle in the 235 will all be competing in the state tournament. Lewis will be looking to repeat as champion while Ringstmeyer and Templeton each went to the state championship last year and will look to get back again. Pierre will be looking for another team title in which they have never lost to in girls wrestling.
For the Governor boys, they have all but two spots filled out. Gable Uhrig in the 106, Bode Minder in the 113, Walker West in the 120, Joey Franks in the 126, Alex Oedekoven in the 132, Rowdy Menning in the 138, Lincoln Shoenhard in the 144, Max Hunsley in the 150, Porter Hunsley in the 157, Will Eilers in the 165, Kalo Steely in the 190 and Elijah Boutchee in the 215 will all compete for the Governors. Boutchee returns to the state tournament as a runner-up last year in the 215. Pierre had three state champions graduate from last year’s team who placed second as a team overall.
Sully Buttes Wrestling
The Sully Buttes Chargers will have the Yellow Hawks competing at the state tournaments this year. Lucas Yellow Hawk will be the lone boys representative Charger at the state tournament while both Tahnie and Cateri are back to the state tournament again. Caterie placed third while Tahnie was fifth. Paige Jonas will join the two girls for the Chargers in her first state tournament appearance.
Stanley County Wrestling
Stanley County will have half the field in the state tournament on the boys side. Returners are Witt Myers, Spencer Sargent and Case Kolda. Jerrick Walker, Landon Bame, Hayden Roggow and Sayth Cronin will join the Buffs in the state tournament. For the girls, both Timber Hanson and Kamora Rutherford will be competing for the Lady Buffs this weekend.
