PIERRE, (KCCR) — South Dakota Governor Larry Rhoden signed a bill this week that will officially move the designation of U-S Highway 14 to Garfield Avenue. Senate Bill 39 was one of a handful bills Rhoden put his signature on this week. Not only will Highway 14 shift to Pierreās truck route of U-S Highway 14-B, it will retitle Euclid Avenue as South Dakota Highway 1889. That number carries double meaning for the Capital City. It is the year South Dakota became a state and the year Pierre became state capital. The theory behind the bill is that navigation programs will take truck drivers down Garfield and not Euclid, where a block stretch of back and forth 90 degree corners and a lower than standard overhead rail crossing has led to numerous vehicles meeting their demise under the viaduct. Senate Bill 39 had no opposition testimony as it moved through the Legislature. The change becomes official on July 1st.
