The Sully Buttes Charger girls and boys came away with different results Friday night against Potter County. The Charger girls fell 56-42 to the Lady Battlers after turning the ball over numerous times, while the Charger boys kept a fast pace, and rolled to a 74-50 victory over the Battler boys in Onida.
The Charger girls trailed 29-21 at the half and were outscored by the hustling Lady Battlers in the third quarter 13-5. Potter County’s defense locked Sully Buttes down, not allowing them passing lanes and clear paths to the basket.
Payge Bakker scored 19 for 7-9 Sully Buttes, while Olivia Olson added 12. For Potter County, balanced scoring was the order with Peyton Stevens hitting for 19 points and Emma Schlacter adding 14 for the 7-9 Lady Battlers.
In the boys game, both teams kept a breakneck pace which suits Sully Buttes to a tee as the Chargers led 42-26 at the half and 63-41 after three quarters. Wesley Wittler once again showed why he is one of the premier players in the state as he finished with 30 points while Gavin Colson came alive and finished with 18 points for 11-3 Sully Buttes, who have won seven in a row.
Jhett Simon scored 17 for 6-10 Potter County with brother Jack Simon adding 11. The Wittlers and Simons are cousins, with Wesley’s father Jesse and the Simons’ mother are brother and sister.
Next up for Sully Buttes is a boys home game Tuesday against Herreid Selby Area. The Charger girls finish the regular season on the road, starting with a girls and boys doubleheader Thursday at Mobridge against Mobridge-Pollock.
