PIERRE, (KCCR) — An inmate at the South Dakota State Penitentiary with a Hughes County conviction has passed away. According to a release from the South Dakota Department of Corrections 20 year-old Anthony Richards passed away Thursday, February 6th at the Jameson Annex at the prison. Richards was convicted in Hughes County for First Degree Robbery. He was serving a seven year prison term with two years suspended. He had been in prison since May of 2024 or eight months before his death. Richards was first arrested on charges in the case on August 19th of 2023. He reached a plea deal in March of 2024. In that plea deal, charges of aggravated assault and grand theft were dismissed by the Hughes County State’s Attorney Casey Deibert. Richards was ordered to repay over 17-hundred dollars in restitution.
