Charger Boys Fall in Winner

The Sully Buttes Charger boys went up against a taller and deeper Winner Warrior team in Winner Saturday and though they may try, Sully Buttes fell 68-51 Saturday afternoon.

Trailing 21-9 at the half, the Chargers rallied in the second, and played it to a 33-27 Winner advantage at halftime.

In the second half Wesley Wittler, who was relatively quiet in the first half, came alive and helped lead the way. Wittler had 4 points at the midway break but finished with 22 for the game. Other than Wittler, junior Gavin Colson was the only other player in double figures hitting for 10 while Teghan Westpahl added nine. At the end of three it was Winner on top 53-41.

The Warriors were led by sophomore Carter Craven, who dominated on the perimeter and around the basket, finishing with 37 points and shooting 11 of 12 from the free throw line. Senior Ryder Halligan ended the afternoon with 15 points, while fellow senior Shawn Hammerbeck totaled 13 points. Hammerbeck is a University of Nebraska signee to play football next season, and the 6’7″ 261 pound low post player was hard to stop around the hoop.

Sully Buttes heads into the Christmas break, and will return to action Saturday December 28th on the road again, for a girls/boys doubleheader against the Wolsey Wessington Warbirds. Monday the 30th of December has the Chargers hosting a girls boys doubleheader against Philip.

The 3-0 Warriors pick back up on December 30th in the Parkston Classic.
