Using their low post presence, the Sully Buttes Charger girls scrapped their way to a 51-43 victory over Herreid Selby Area Friday night in Onida.
The Chargers trailed after the first quarter by a 14-13 score, thanks to fast ball movement by the athletic Wolverine backcourt and the three point shooting of sophomore Taryn Hettick. At the half the Chargers got back on top 27-26.
In the second half Sully Buttes used balanced scoring from all five starters to push a 40-35 lead, and the Wolverines, running out of clock in the fourth quarter, had to foul and put the Chargers at the line. Sully Buttes almost obliged shooting just 16 of 34 for the game. Leading the way in scoring for the Chargers was Payge Bakker with 19 and Olivia Olson added nine.
At halftime, Alexis Yackley-Warner was enshrined in the Sully Buttes Athletic Hall of Fame. Yackley was the point guard for two time state champs in 2007 and 2008 and a Spirit of Su Award winner.
Sully Buttes now evens their record at 2-2 with their next game Saturday December 28th at Wolsey Wessington while the 0-2 Wolverines play at Mobridge Pollock Saturday night the 21st.
