Sully Buttes Girls Drop Opener on Home Court

Sully Buttes Girls Drop Opener on Home Court

In what looked like a first game, the Sully Buttes Chargers misfired from the field, committed too many turnovers and fell to Ipswich by the final of 49-35 Tuesday night in Onida.

The Tigers collapsed their defense around the low post play of Payge Bakker, Scottlyn Kinney and Annaliese Van Zee, forcing Sully Buttes to find different avenues to the basket.

Bakker still scored 27 points to lead all scorers, but was the only player in double digits. Add to that, way too many turnovers, 31 total on the night, led Ipswich to use their athleticism and move the ball around the court. Balanced scoring by the Tigers didn’t allow the Charger defense to key on any one player.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Gabby Wald’s 10 points, Marley Guthmiller finished with nine and Anna Nierman added seven. The Tigers start the season at 1-0, and will face Hitchcock Tulare at home Saturday afternoon, while Sully Buttes drops to 0-1 and travel to Bowdle Friday to take on the North Central Thunder, who will be playing their first game of the new season.
