Noem Education Savings Account Proposal At The Heart Of Annual Legislative School Board Meeting

PIERRE, (KCCR) — The Pierre School Board hosted the District 24 legislative delegation for the Board’s annual pre legislative session meeting. Governor Kristi Noem’s proposal to spend four-million dollars on a so-called Education Savings Account took up much of the conversation. Representative Will Mortenson called it baffling adding new programs when significant cuts are being proposed…

Mortenson added he’s also in favor of parents being able to decide where to send their students for school. Board Chair Joan Adam is concerned the E-S-A would incentivize taking children from public schools with no standards for achievement…

Senator Jim Mehlhaff defended the Governor’s proposals saying the E-S-A shouldn’t be viewed as an attack on public education…

The legislators were given a short presentation on the District prior to the discussion on the upcoming 100th legislative session.
