A run down of all seven state title games for the 2024 football season.
Thursday
9B – #2 Faulkton Area vs. #5 Sully Buttes – 11:00 AM
9AA – #1 Parkston vs. #2 Hamlin – 7:00
The top two seeds battle in 9AA tonight as Parkston and Hamlin as both teams are undefeated on the season. Parkston, the top overall seed is looking for a second straight state title along with its second straight undefeated season. Parkston is at the Dome for the third consecutive year with a loss to Wall two years ago. Meanwhile, Hamlin lost to Parkston 26-3 in the state semifinals last year. It’s the first trip back since 2021 and looking for its first title since winning the 9B state championship in 2014. It would be its sixth title overall and they would win in its third different classification. The Chargers won four of its five titles in 11B in the late 80s and early 90s.
Friday
9A – #2 Howard vs. #4 Wolsey-Wessington – 10:00 AM
Friday morning begins three state championships as Wolsey-Wessington, one of two teams to knock off a number one seed and one of three non number one seeds in the championships takes on undefeated Howard. Wolsey-Wessington’s only loss is to Parkston, 30-22. The Warbirds beat Wall 30-28 in a wild semifinal game to reach the title game for the fifth time with the last win in 2020, beating Dell Rapids St. Mary 32-14. Howard lost the title last year to 9AA Parkston 12-7. Howard won the title last in 2021 over Herreid/Selby Area. The Tigers this year, allowed just 14 points to Viborg-Hurley, the most in any game this year.
11B – #1 Sioux Valley vs. #2 Winner – 2:00
The Winner Warriors are back at the Dome for the first time since 2022 and after winning it all in 2021. The Warriors went to the title game in four consecutive years. The Warriors are undefeated again this season with two shutouts heading into the state title game beating St. Thomas More 36-0 last Friday. Sioux Valley is also undefeated and beat Elk-Point Jefferson 28-14 last Friday. It’s only the second ever trip to the Dome for Sioux Valley who won it all in 1988 over Bon Homme 34-28.
11AA – #2 Watertown vs. #4 Pierre – 7:00
Saturday
11A – #1 Sioux Falls Christian vs. #3 Lennox – 12:00
Undefeated Sioux Falls Christian faces Lennox in a rematch from September 13 when the Chargers won 19-8. The 11-0 Chargers are back in the title game for the first time since 2018 when they went back-to-back in 11B. They’ve been the best team in 11A this season, but the Orioles gave them a run back in week three. Lennox is looking for its second ever title after winning in 1982. Lennox lost in 2019 to Canton 46-8 in its only other trip to the Dome.
11AAA – #1 Brandon Valley vs. #2 Lincoln – 5:00
A rematch from Week Six, the Lincoln Patriots will look to avenge its only loss of the season as the Lynx try to cap off the undefeated season. Brandon Valley last won in 2020, but lost in 2021 in the latest trip. Brandon Valley survived Jefferson last week Friday 37-34 to keep the Cavaliers from getting back to the Dome. The Lynx beat Lincoln 39-13. The Patriots are trying to go back-to-back for the second time in 11AAA. They were the first two champions when AAA started in 2013 and 14. Lincoln is a perfect 4-0 in state title games.
