PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Sioux Falls man charged in Hughes County on petty theft and a third D-U-I charge appeared in court for the first time Tuesday. Pierre police arrested 25 year-old Andrew Dejong Saturday after he allegedly drove off after getting fueling up at a local convenience store. Appearing in court from the Hughes County Jail, Dejong requested an attorney and release from jail, telling Sixth Circuit Judge Christina Klinger that he wanted to be put on the 24-Seven Program because he wanted to see his five children. In opposing the request, Hughes County State’s Attorney Casey Deibert told Klinger, Dejong has a 31 page criminal history; one the longest she’s seen. That history includes 39 failure to appear charges along with six felonies and burglaries. Seven cases are currently pending in Minnehaha County and one in Pennington County. Klinger told Dejong a personal recognizance bond would not protect the community and denied a change in bond. Klinger appointed Cash Anderson to represent Dejong, whose next court appearance is December 10th.
