PIERRE, (KCCR) — A Milesville man is one of three people involved in a fatal crash on Interstate 90 in McCook County. The South Dakota Department of Public Safety says the three-vehicle crash happened Sunday morning around 7:15 am two miles southeast of Salem. The preliminary investigation indicates a Mazda driven by a 26 year-old female from Canistota was travel west on the interstate when the vehicle left the roadway and struck the start of a guardrail. The Mazda then re-entered the road surface where it was struck from behind by a 2005 Dodge Ram driven by a 56 year-old man from Alexandria. The Mazda was struck a second time, in the front, by a Peterbilt semi with a livestock trailer. The driver of the semi is a 44 year-old man from Milesville, in Haakon County. The driver of the Mazda was airlifted to a Sioux Falls hospital where she was pronounced dead. The driver of the Dodge suffered minor injuries while the semi driver was not injured. Alcohol is considered to be a factor in the initial crash. The names of those involved are being withheld pending notification of family.
