The Watertown Arrows scored the final three touchdowns of the game and would shutout Pierre in the second half to win 28-14 in Pierre in a matchup of the top two teams in the state.
Watertown would intercept quarterback Kaleb Lounsbury three times on the night, with the first turnover leading to points for the Arrows as they took a 10 play drive nearly 80 yards as Spencer Wientjes would run it in from 10 yards out. Pierre would tie the game up on an eight play drive which resulted in George Stalley scoring on a throw from two yards out before Carter Schiefelbein would put the Governors in the lead on the next drive with a 30 yard touchdown grab and Pierre had a 14-7 lead late in the half. But a fake punt on fourth and 15 led to the Arrows responding and scoring to tie the game at 14-14 at the half. Pinned deep midway in the third quarter, the Governors tried to punt out of their own endzone which was blocked and returned by Kaden Decker into the end zone for the go-ahead score. One more scoring drive of 96 yards for the Arrows secured the win and upset of Governors as both teams are now 2-1 on the season. Lounsbury would finish 19-39 for 156 yards with two touchdowns and three interceptions. Jacob Mikkonen had a team high 12 tackles including two sacks.
The Governors will turn the attention to Brookings next Friday. Coverage will begin at 6:30 with kickoff at 7:00 at Dana J. Dykhouse Stadium on KCCR and on YouTube at KCCR Sports.
